Depression Can Co-Occur with Other Illnesses

Certain medications and some medical conditions can cause the same symptoms as depression. A doctor can rule out these possibilities by doing a physical exam, clinical assessment, and lab tests.

If there is not a medical condition that is causing the depression, your doctor may talk with you about depression treatment options.

If your depression is severe or if medications are not helping, you may be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist, both specialists trained in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions.
